Against All Odds contradicts the stereotypical view of Keith Haring as simply a Pop artist who created nothing more than fun, vacuous, commercial icons that were cute, colorful and gimmicky. Focusing on his deceptively simple line drawings, this exhibition proposes instead a view of Haring as an accomplished and traditional draftsman, more concerned with social issues than he was with the superficial. Haring’s artistic success lay in his ability to harness powerful content and mold it into a skillfully crafted form. This exhibition focuses on the more formal work Haring produced mid-career, by presenting work from his first large-scale solo exhibition of 1981 and the nine short years that followed, until his untimely death in 1990 at the age of 31. The exhibition at tempts to contextualize Haring’s work by also exhibiting artists that were part of his life, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Tseng Kwong Chi, and Andy Warhol. Alongside the work of his peers and friends, Haring’s colorful and popular yet powerful and acidic work becomes a record of the 1980s.
